  • A Clear Path to Your Ideal Kitchen: 10 Critical Design Steps

A Clear Path to Your Ideal Kitchen: 10 Critical Design Steps

A thoughtfully designed kitchen is much more than a collection of cabinets and appliances—after all, there’s a reason for the quote “the kitchen is the heart of the home.” It’s a soul reflection of lifestyle and personality. In the world of interior design, every detail matters, from lighting to functional flow. At Loran, we believe that the most beautiful kitchens are those that seamlessly blend form and function, elevating everyday moments into extraordinary experiences. Whether you’re planning a culinary haven or a multipurpose hub, understanding the finer points of design can make all the difference. Join us as we outline essential principles and smart strategies to transform your kitchen into an elegant and efficient space!

    1. Skimp on Lighting? Think Again!

A ceiling grid of pot lights might check the “well-lit” box, but it leaves the space feeling one-note. It flattens the atmosphere and misses the opportunity to create mood, depth, and focus.  For lighting, it’s all about layers. Pot lights are fine for general light, but we always recommend adding decorative pendants, under-cabinet lighting, and sometimes even a sconce or two. That mix gives the space dimension and makes every corner feel considered.

This is an excellent example of integrated cabinetry lighting. Beyond its functionality, it offers the flexibility to create mood lighting tailored for any hosting occasions.

    2. Choose your Hard Surfaces Wisely

Your countertops are the stage for your culinary adventures, but they need to be resilient enough for life’s messes. Marble is something often seen in inspiration images on social media or print; however it can stain, etch and scratch easily and this may not be ideal for every lifestyle. Our all time fan favorite is natural stone which is exceptionally durable! Lastly, don’t forget about the unsung hero, your backsplash! It’s the ultimate support act… a quiet supporting lead that never steals the spotlight.

If you prefer a more detailed backsplash, we recommend strategic placement—consider positioning it as an accent feature to enhance your space effectively.

    3. Size Matters

Critically thinking about your island is essential. An island should never be too small or too big, it should serve the space, not dominate it. Oversized islands look impressive but often kill flow and feel like an obstacle course. Too small, and you’ve lost valuable function. With every kitchen we design we focus on sizing the island to the room: big enough to work hard, but never in the way.

Our latest Loran project, designed locally by a member of the Stil James Studio. The layout was designed all around the kitchens focal point: the island. It was crafted to resemble a piece of furniture, adding a stylish and distinct touch to the space.

    4. The Classic Work Triangle – Still a Star

Always design around the work triangle – The classic triangle—fridge, sink, stove—is still relevant for a reason. It creates efficient flow and minimizes unnecessary steps while cooking. We’ll bend it for lifestyle but never ignore it entirely.

    5. Where, oh where can my microwave go?

And when it comes to microwaves, we give them a proper home—built into a lower cabinet, tucked into a pantry, or hidden within the island. It’s all about keeping the utility without compromising the beauty.

I spy with my little eye a microwave.

    6. Trash Cans designed to be Seamless & Discreet

We always integrate garbage and recycling into the cabinetry—typically a pull-out near the sink or prep area—so it’s functional, discreet, and completely seamless. It immediately breaks the rhythm of a well-designed kitchen. No matter how beautiful the cabinetry or countertops are, a trash bin sitting out in the open draws the eye in all the wrong ways. It’s one of those practical details that should disappear into the background—not become a focal point.

A garbage solution that has it all: compost, recycling, and regular trash. The possibilities are endless for how many you can incorporate into your kitchen—typically, we see a minimum of two, which can be placed side by side or separated for better organization.

    7. A Home for Everything

Baking supplies, cookbooks, gadgets—oh my! Whether it’s a dedicated pantry, custom drawers, or clever storage, we believe every item should have its perfect home, so your counters stay clear and your mind stays Zen.

These are just a few of our top kitchen accessories—if you can dream it, we can make it!

    8. A Multi-tasking Marvel

Think outside your stomach – Kitchens are for more than food—coffee routines, homework, parties and morning chaos. We always carve out drop zones or seating that make the space work for daily life.

    9. Too Much of a Good Thing

Too much trim or detail can feel fussy. We lean into clean lines, beautiful materials, and proportion that feels effortless—not overdone.

A great example of “too much detailing”

Another completed project designed and led by a member of Stil James. They recognized the character of this heritage home and they aimed to honour its charm rather than distract from it. They chose clean, simple lines to achieve a seamless and timeless look.

    10. Timeless Twice Over

We recommend timeless for cabinetry, countertops, and layout—then bring in trend through lighting, hardware, and paint. It’s easier to update, and it keeps the kitchen from feeling dated in five years.

Here’s another example from our sister company, Stil James. These kitchen designs feature a creamy foundation seen in the cabinetry and some hard finishes. While darker accents are incorporated, they remain within a neutral palette. The true creativity shines in the lighting, highlighting unique shapes and metal finishes for a distinctive touch.

At Loran, our philosophy goes beyond mere aesthetics—it’s about creating environments that support and inspire the way you live. As Victoria Armour, our founder, passionately asserts, “Kitchens aren’t just about cabinetry and measurements—they’re personal, high-traffic spaces that have to look beautiful and work hard every single day.” This understanding drove us to establish our own millwork company, allowing us to marry meticulous craftsmanship with innovative design concepts.

By integrating the design process from concept to cabinetry fabrication, we ensure that each project embodies a cohesive vision rooted in both timeless appeal and practicality. When your cabinetry, layout, and finishes are chosen with purpose you gain a space that harmonizes aesthetic delight with everyday resilience. The result is a kitchen that not only wows on appearance but also enhances your lifestyle, simplifies routines, and adapts to your evolving needs. Investing in a personalized design approach and in-house craftsmanship means your kitchen remains stunning and functional for years to come.

  • Illuminating your Cabinetry: Elevating Design with Light

Illuminating your Cabinetry: Elevating Design with Light

Lighting is a critical component to the art of enhancing your custom cabinetry, it serves not only to illuminate but also to elevate the overall aesthetic of a space. By strategically placing fixtures such as under-cabinet lighting, pendants, and accent lights, we can enhance the texture and finish of cabinetry, drawing attention to its craftsmanship while showcasing its unique character. The right lighting acts as a storytelling element, weaving together form, function, and ambiance to create a cohesive environment that invites warmth and engagement. While at Loran we focus on millwork at our core we strive to make the design process easier for you! We’ve created this guide that goes over lighting characteristics based on overall design style, it can be a great tool as a jumping off point while thinking of your own design goals!

    Sleek Modernism

In modern design, the allure of simplicity and clean lines reigns supreme. To enhance the sleekness of cabinetry, consider integrating recessed lighting or minimalist pendant fixtures highlighting the architectural features. The key is to not overwhelm the visual landscape with modern designs. Under-cabinet lighting can further elevate the design, creating an enchanting spotlight for curated décor and guiding the eye to focal points. This strategy beautifully embodies the elegance and sophistication intrinsic to modern aesthetics.

A prime example of this philosophy is Ali Bud’s kitchen design from the “Thornhill” project, where understated lines meet recessed cabinetry. Adorned with flat trim and complemented by the simplistic silhouette of the drum pendants. Here, the island and its scrumptious marble accents take center stage, while the lighting, along with other elements, play a supportive role in the overall composition.

Another great approach captured in different materials and design. This thoughtful approach showcases how simplistic lighting can foster harmony within the space, allowing the rich textures and materials to shine through, creating a serene yet striking atmosphere.

    A Chic Country Kitchen

Emphasizing warmth and comfort, the farmhouse style thrives on the idea of layered lighting. Vintage-inspired pendant lights and rustic sconces infuse the space with a sense of nostalgia, enhancing the cozy, welcoming atmosphere, which is what makes this design style so charming.

Utilizing recessed lighting or charming wall sconces to illuminate open shelving for handmade pottery or cherished cookbooks creates a cohesive blend of ambient lighting with rustic charm, which defines farmhouse interiors. Not to mention seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.

    From Maria Flanges project “Brenham”

    Timeless Traditionalism

In traditional settings, it’s all about the detailing and craftsmanship. Ornate chandeliers and decorative wall sconces not only illuminate cabinetry but also act as striking statement pieces that elevate the overall design.

This is a great example of thoughtfully placed accent lighting that can draw attention to intricate details and the richness of the custom cabinetry.

    Easy, Breezy Coastal

Coastal design embodies airy openness with the essence of seaside living. To maximize this quality, harness natural light and organic materials.

Light fixtures crafted from wicker or Capiz shells are beautifully within these spaces and can add a touch of tranquility. This thoughtful approach to lighting fosters an inviting atmosphere that rejoices in the beauty of the natural world.

    Organic Mid- Century Modernism

Mid-century modern design artfully combines geometric shapes and organic material. To further accentuate this aesthetic, employ accent lighting to spotlight retro elements—such as clean lines and vibrant hues—creating dynamic contrasts that invigorate the overall composition. This deliberate play of light and shapes amplifies the mid-century spirit, but also seamlessly merges modernism with a touch of timeless charm.

A combination of pendant lights and elevated pot lights, paired with the nostalgic checkerboard backsplash is the definition of mid-century modern. The three don’t take away from the cabinetry but rather serve to enhance the design.

Ultimately, the careful integration of lighting transforms cabinetry into more than just a functional element—it becomes an artistic statement that enhances the narrative of your home. By selecting the appropriate fixtures and placement, you can create a harmonious balance that brings out the character of your cabinetry, ensuring it not only serves its purpose but also enchants and inspires. Embrace the transformative power of lighting, and watch as your custom cabinetry flourishes, capturing the essence of your unique design vision.

These delightful organizers not only keep your spice collection beautifully arranged, but they also banish kitchen clutter, making room for quick meals or creative experiments on Saturday nights.      Transform the workflow of your kitchen with rollout trays and make the most of your cabinet space. These stylish and functional trays bring even the deepest corners within easy reach, eliminating the hassle of bending or stretching.

They blend design and practicality, ideal for storing pots, pans, and larger appliances, they enhance both accessibility and efficiency while you cook.       Additionally, they work wonders in your pantry, providing a smart solution for managing those extra bulk purchases from Costco.

    4. Stash the Trash

Enhance your kitchen’s design and functionality with pullout waste bins that effortlessly blend style and practicality. By hiding waste while ensuring easy access, these bins contribute to a cleaner, more organized space, keeping your kitchen looking sleek and tidy. For optimal convenience, position your pullout waste bins near the prep area—such as by the sink or island—allowing for seamless disposal during cooking and clean-up. With this smart solution, you can maintain a hygienic kitchen environment without sacrificing aesthetics.

For our pet lovers, it might be a great and convenient location to house your pets food!

  • The Ultimate Kitchen Trio: Cabinetry, Counters & Backsplash

The Ultimate Kitchen Trio: Cabinetry, Counters & Backsplash

Creating a balanced kitchen design requires careful consideration of various elements, particularly countertops, backsplash, and cabinetry. These three components work together to establish a cohesive look and feel in one of the most important spaces in the home. Whether you’re undergoing a full renovation or simply updating your kitchen, coordinating your cabinetry with your countertops and backsplash can elevate the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space. In this article, we will explore key strategies for achieving a perfect balance, including choosing complementary colors, textures, and materials that reflect your personal style while enhancing your kitchen’s charm. We say design doesn’t have rules which is true, it’s a no rule sort of world, however at Loran we’re all about making your renovation painless, so we broke down some helpful guidelines while countertop and backsplash shopping!

Rule #1: Choose One Statement Piece

When diving into the design dance of a space, remember: harmony is the name of the game! Think of your countertops, backsplash, and cabinetry as a chic trio where everyone knows their role. Choose one standout piece to shine center stage, while the others play supportive ensemble members—no hogging the spotlight!

A glamorous, veined countertop? Perfect with a quietly sophisticated backsplash.

Conversely, let a show-stopping backsplash dazzle alongside a serene, solid countertop.

    Rule #2: Consider Undertones

Even if your backsplash, countertops, and cabinets aren’t identical twins in terms of shade, they should definitely share a family resemblance with the undertones.

Warm tones—think creamy vanillas, golden honey, and rich browns—flourish when mixed with their fellow warm hues.

On the flip side, cool tones like crisp whites, soothing grays, and tranquil blues harmonize beautifully with each other.

So, find your tonal tribe and let them unite for an aesthetically pleasing ensemble that sings in perfect harmony!

Rule #3: Consider Your Start / Stop Points

The design and placement of your backsplash is like the cherry on top of your kitchen, it can significantly impact the perception of space. Extending the backsplash all the way to the ceiling creates an illusion of taller walls, giving you that wow factor.

When you align it creatively with existing architectural lines, it fosters a flowing harmony that’s easy on the eyes but just as visually stunning.

By thinking of your backsplash as a stylish accent that ties everything together, you can add a splash of personality and fun to your space. So, get playful with your design choices and turn that backsplash into a showstopper, ensuring your room feels complete and fabulous!

    Rule #4: Consider Overall Style

Sometimes the toughest design decisions can lead to the simplest solutions, and when navigating your selections, returning to your overarching design aesthetic can be incredibly enlightening. The next time you’re faced with a design dilemma, take a step back and let your aesthetic guide you to clarity and always inspiration!

    Traditional Recommendations

Traditional design exudes classic elegance and timeless appeal, making subway tile an excellent choice, especially when paired with a marble or quartz countertop that features minimal to dramatic veining. To elevate the design, consider extending your countertop up the backsplash for a striking and cohesive look that adds depth and sophistication

    Modern Recommendations

Modernism celebrates clean lines and the beauty of simplicity. A 4×4 tile in a stacked layout enhances the sleek aesthetic of modern designs, while choosing a glossy finish for your countertops can introduce a touch of contemporary polish. Alternatively, embracing a dark stone countertop can create a stunning contrast that highlights the minimalist approach.

    Farmhouse Recommendations

Farmhouse design embodies rustic charm, emphasizing layers and textures that evoke warmth. Opt for more organic materials, such as a textured backsplash that adds visual interest, or a countertop with a leather finish that brings a tactile element to the space.

    And That’s A Wrap!

To summarize, remember that pairing countertops and backsplashes with your cabinetry is all about having fun and making a statement! Start by choosing one fabulous standout piece—be it a dazzling countertop or a vibrant backsplash—that’s sure to steal the spotlight. Next, tune in to those undertones when it comes to matching your materials it’s about harmony. Don’t forget to think about your start and stop points; how high or low your backsplash goes can dramatically change the vibe of the space, so let that artistic flair shine. And of course, keep your overall design style in mind—whether you’re rocking a chic modern look, embracing cozy farmhouse vibes, or channeling timeless traditionalism—make sure every element is in unison. By following these playful guidelines, you’ll create a kitchen that not only looks amazing but also reflects your unique personality and most importantly, will always feel like home.

    earth tones
    earth tones
It doesn’t always have to be colour. This is a good play on a rich earthy palette while keeping all cabinetry wood.

    1. Neutral Earth Tones

Earthy hues are set to dominate the cabinetry world in 2025, dare we say it might even become the new “white kitchen.” Shades like taupe, sage, terracotta and soft browns create a welcoming and natural atmosphere which can lend itself to several different styles. Green has become a fan favourite amongst the Maritimers, we’re seeing a combination of green islands paired with taupe cabinetry.

    2. Bold Jewel Tones

If you have a passion for color—or are eager to embrace it—this trend is tailor-made for you! Bold jewel tones are set to make a statement in 2025, with rich hues like emerald green, deep red, and sapphire blue effortlessly blending sophistication with playful charm. While the Atlantic Canadian demographic may still be hesitant to introduce these vibrant shades into their kitchens, at Stil James we’re seeing an enthusiasm for incorporating them into other spaces, like pantries, mudrooms and dining rooms!

    3. Soft Pastels

In contrast to the above trend, soft pastels are making a comeback! Colour’s like mint green, blush pinks and lavenders have a subtle impact creating a calming atmosphere. The key to this trend is to ensure the palette always remains soft and cohesive. Examples of where this trend can be explored are bathrooms, children’s bedrooms or playrooms.

    4. Wood Tones

Last but never least, a crowd pleaser: wood! This material brings warmth and natural beauty to interiors. This trend embraces a spectrum of wood finishes, from light, airy oak to deeper, richer walnut hues, again offering homeowners a versatile palette that can complement various decor styles. The move towards sustainability plays a vital role here, as consumers increasingly seek eco-friendly options without compromising on aesthetic appeal. As a result, cabinetry featuring textured wood grains and matte finishes is expected to dominate, infusing spaces with an organic touch that enhances the overall ambiance while promoting a connection to nature.

Have a look at the six wood options we offer at Loran that can be customizable into just about anything!

    The Loran Difference

  • A Microscope into Cabinetry & The Important Question: Why Loran?

A Microscope into Cabinetry & The Important Question: Why Loran?

When it comes to transforming a kitchen into the heart of the home, cabinetry plays a pivotal role, not just in aesthetics but in functionality and longevity. Loran Cabinetry stand out as an investment worth considering offering a perfect blend of craftsmanship, customization, and quality that elevates any space. Unlike mass-produced options such as those from IKEA, investing in Loran cabinets means prioritizing durability and personalized design that reflects your unique style, while also enhancing the overall value of your home. In this article, we will explore the numerous benefits of good cabinetry, from its resilience to wear and tear to the tailored features that meet your family’s specific needs. Understanding these advantages will empower potential clients to recognize the true value that Loran Cabinetry brings to their home, making them a choice worth every penny.

    1. What’s It Made Of?

At Loran, we pride ourselves on constructing all cabinets from robust ¾” solid wood and high-quality plywood, ensuring exceptional durability for even the busiest areas of your home. Our materials are specifically chosen to support the weight of heavy countertops, resist moisture damage, and maintain structural integrity throughout the delivery and installation process.

So, what exactly is plywood, and what are some alternative options available for budget-conscious consumers?

Plywood is engineered using multiple layers of wood arranged both lengthwise and crosswise, enhancing its strength and resilience. In contrast, particleboard—commonly found in budget products from retailers like Ikea—is a less expensive alternative.

    Ikea cabinets
    IKEA Materials

However, it is notably more susceptible to moisture damage and during installation, screws and joints can lead to splitting. Once compromised, particleboard can be challenging to repair, leading to noticeable wear and tear over time that can be difficult to conceal or fix.

Investing in solid wood and plywood means safeguarding your cabinetry against these issues, ensuring longevity and beauty for years to come.

    2. How’s It Painted?

The face of cabinetry is arguably just as crucial as its construction, and at Loran, we elevate this aspect with our refined colour selections and premium paint application. We utilize a conversion paint varnish that undergoes a meticulous process: it is carefully primed, hand-sanded for a smooth finish, painted or stained, and ultimately cured and sealed for maximum durability. While Ikea offers a selection of pre-painted cabinetry, achieving a truly unique look with their products can be more challenging than it appears on social media platforms like TikTok. The prep work, time commitment, and costs associated with painting cabinets can quickly add up. Moreover, due to the material composition, achieving a flawless finish—even with a sprayer—can be elusive. In high-traffic areas, wear and tear can lead to chipping and deterioration over time.

    3. What’s A Dovetail, Exactly?

Did you know the drawers’ boxes and joints are some of the first things to fall apart in lower-end cabinetry? This is because they’re typically only secured with staples or notched butt joints and overtime they don’t have the strength to keep the drawer front secure.

    dovetail

At Loran, we recognize the risk and we only use 5/8 solid wood dovetail drawer boxes.

    dovetail

The standard for quality cabinetry is a solid hardwood drawer box with dovetail joints and heavy plywood bottoms. Their long-lasting and durable; the sides meet the dovetails and it gains strength from their wooden joints, locking it in place.

At Loran, our price point is the sweet spot between mass market stores like Ikea and fully custom, high-end millwork companies. Typically, in today’s industry the use of dovetail is only being seen within the lux market. However, part of our design DNA is creating spaces that work as beautifully as they look. We use durable materials that stand the test of time—because we want your spaces to be prepared for real life!

    4. How Is It Assembled?

Fully assembled cabinets from Loran are crafted in our factory, expertly boxed, and shipped ready for installation—providing you with a hassle-free experience. In contrast, ready-to-assemble (RTA) models are intended for homeowners or contractors to assemble on-site, which introduces differences in cost, convenience, and structural integrity. Loran’s fully assembled cabinets come packaged as cohesive units, with doors and drawers already intact. This factory assembly process utilizes advanced construction techniques, including dovetail joints, power fasteners, and both hot and cold glue, allowing for bonding on a microscopic level. This results in an overall enhancement of the cabinetry’s strength and durability.

    assembly
    assembly

All Loran cabinets are delivered right to your driveway and from there the contractor or installer will take over!

On the other hand, RTA cabinets are delivered in separate components, including the cabinet body, face frame, drawers, drawer glides, inserts, doors, and hardware. While they are typically more budget-friendly, the assembly can be time-consuming, often presenting challenges due to the constraints associated with home job sites. By choosing Loran, you invest in quality and convenience, ensuring that your cabinetry is not only beautiful but also exceptionally sturdy.

To wrap up, investing in high-quality millwork is not just a choice for immediate aesthetic improvement; it is a long-term investment that elevates the value and functionality of your space. The superior craftsmanship and materials used in high-quality millwork, like Loran Cabinetry, ensure durability and timeless design, reducing the need for frequent replacements or upgrades. Furthermore, custom millwork enhances both the comfort and efficiency of your home, catering to your unique needs and preferences. As a result, this investment not only enriches your living environment but also provides substantial returns in the future. Choosing high-quality millwork ultimately reflects a commitment to excellence and creates a lasting impression that enhances the beauty and character of all spaces.
